Travels Through Pacific Coast States

By Renee Manford

Many of my paintings are created in connection with my summer vacations. Some are done on location, while others are created from photos. Several were taken while my husband drives and I hang my head out the window and take pictures. With these I hand paint the scenes or use the photos to create a monotype prints. I am also involved with a group of artists in the Eugene and surrounding area, which meet regularly, usually twice a week, outdoors or as we call it “plein air”. I do not make it to all painting locations, but when I do I have a blast. The least done, but not less loved, is painting from imagined places or childhood memories. One such memory is being on the coast as a child and experiencing the Columbus day storm close to where it first touched land. “The storm” is so titled because of my connection with that childhood experience.

I have no expectations regarding what others should see or feel about my art. I want my art to move others in ways that make sense to them. Even though my pieces are about me and my viewpoints, I want it to also be about them. I enjoy watching others view my work and to hear their comments, especially when they don’t know I am the artist. They are an inspiration to me, and they help me to appreciate my art on other levels.

There are so many terrible things happening in this world. I like to take people to places that will promote healing. The healing for me arrives from the inherent beauty of nature and people. Everyone’s healing can come from different sources, and no source is better than any other. The healing is what is important. If my art can promote good feelings in others I have accomplished what I want to do with my life.

I have worked in oil, acrylic, water color, acrylic ink, and graphite, and dabbled in stone sculpting, weaving, and pottery. I have a degree in graphic design and have done some freelance work. By honoring the partnership between myself and the medium I am using, life is allowed to present itself.

Most of my formal training is from LCC. I studied under, Adam Grosowsky, Craig Spilman, Satoko Motouji, Lee Imonen, Andy Salzman, and JS Bird. My informal training came from friends and family who supported my efforts and rallied for me—many thanks to both groups.
